About this mall

Bullring Shopping Centre opened in September 2003 at the junction of Bull Street and New Street in Birmingham city centre, with approximately 112,000 sqm of gross leasable area across a scheme that transformed Birmingham’s historic Bull Ring market area into a landmark retail and public space development. The property is fully owned by Hammerson, which completed acquisition of the remaining 50% joint-venture interest in August 2025, as Birmingham’s premier enclosed city-centre retail destination.

The Bullring’s defining architectural feature is the Selfridges Birmingham department store, designed by Future Systems and clad in 15,000 aluminium discs, a building that has become one of the most photographed retail facades in the United Kingdom and a symbol of Birmingham’s commercial renewal. The Selfridges flagship anchors the premium retail positioning, with the broader tenant mix spanning fashion, lifestyle, dining, and services across the premium and mid-market segments. The Grand Central development above New Street Station, connected via underground walkway, adds a further 35,000 sqm of retail space where the former John Lewis flagship permanently closed in 2020 with the space subsequently subject to repositioning, and together the Birmingham city-centre retail complex represents approximately 155,000 sqm of enclosed retail accessible from one of the UK’s busiest intercity rail stations.

Birmingham’s population of approximately 1.2 million and the wider West Midlands conurbation of approximately 2.9 million provide the metropolitan catchment. New Street Station, one of the busiest intercity rail stations in the UK outside London, provides direct accessibility from across the Midlands and national rail connections. The pedestrianised New Street and High Street create strong footfall from Birmingham’s employment, tourism, and residential base.

Hammerson manages the Bullring as the flagship Birmingham asset. The Selfridges building is among the most architecturally celebrated retail structures in the UK, and the combination of architectural distinctiveness, city-centre accessibility, and the Grand Central connection makes the Birmingham retail complex commercially resilient to out-of-town competition in ways that more generic enclosed malls cannot claim.
