Reiss is the British premium contemporary fashion brand majority-owned by Next plc, the FTSE 100 retailer, with approximately 72% of the equity following Next’s staged investments in March 2021, 2022, and September 2023. The Reiss family retains 22% and Reiss management 6%. CEO Christos Angelides, formerly Group Product Director at Next, has led the business since the 2021 partnership.
Founded in 1971 by David Reiss in London, the brand grew from a single Bishopsgate menswear store into a global premium fashion house positioned above the high street but below luxury, occupying a contemporary-tailoring sweet spot serving professional women and men. Following Next’s £128 million transaction with Warburg Pincus in September 2023, Reiss results are consolidated into Next plc’s accounts. The brand reported total sales of £324.6 million in the year to 28 January 2023, an increase of 26.4% year-over-year. Reiss runs its e-commerce and operational infrastructure through Next’s Total Platform, the wholesale and warehousing service Next provides to portfolio brands, which has driven margin expansion and international scaling since launch in February 2022. Next’s annual report described Reiss alongside FatFace and Joules as “third-party brands” within the group, with Next consolidating revenue and profit in proportion to its ownership percentage.
Reiss operates approximately 200 stores globally, with the strongest concentrations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, the Middle East, and the rest of Europe. The brand’s US growth has been a particular focus, with new mall openings and standalone street locations across major markets. For mall operators, Reiss is an upper Class A premium specialty tenant typically taking 200 to 500 square meters, fitting alongside Theory, COS, Sandro, and similar contemporary-premium brands rather than high-street fast-fashion or full luxury. Co-tenancy with the Next-controlled FatFace, Joules, and partner-brand UK franchises (Victoria’s Secret UK, Bath & Body Works UK) is increasingly visible.
