Cabot Circus

Cabot Circus opened in September 2008 at Bond Street in Bristol city centre with approximately 120,000 sqm of gross leasable area as part of the Bristol Alliance joint venture between Hammerson and Legal & General. The development, which also encompasses the adjacent Broadmead shopping area, transformed Bristol’s post-war retail district into one of the most significant city-centre retail destinations in the south of England outside London.

Cabot Circus is architecturally distinguished by its glass-domed roofline and the integration of listed and heritage buildings into the new development, including the restored Georgian-era glass arcade incorporated into the scheme. Harvey Nichols opened a flagship at Cabot Circus, its first store outside London, establishing Bristol as a premium retail market of national significance. Cineworld operates the multiplex cinema with IMAX capability. Bristol’s population of approximately 470,000 includes a large student population from the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, with the professional services and creative industries cluster adding a high-income catchment. The public realm between Cabot Circus and Broadmead, including the Galleries and Union Street, creates an extended pedestrian retail circuit.

The greater Bristol metropolitan area houses approximately 700,000 residents within a 30-minute drive. Temple Meads mainline rail station connects Bristol to London Paddington in approximately 75 minutes and to Cardiff in under an hour. Bristol’s M5/M4 junction gives the retail circuit strong car-based accessibility from across the south west.

Hammerson and Legal & General manage Cabot Circus and Broadmead as a unified retail estate in Bristol city centre. The Harvey Nichols anchor was the commercial signal that positioned Bristol alongside Leeds, Edinburgh, and Manchester as a secondary luxury retail market, a status that has driven subsequent premium fashion investment in the Bristol retail circuit.
