About River Island

The High Court approved River Island’s Company Voluntary Arrangement on August 8, 2025, authorizing the closure of 33 stores from the 230-strong UK and Ireland fleet alongside rent reductions of 25% to 75% across 38 additional underperforming locations over a 36-month period. The Lewis family, founders and continuing controlling shareholders through holding company Blue Coast Capital, committed £40 million in emergency funding as the largest creditor in the restructuring; without CVA approval, the company warned it would face administration within weeks. Landlord opposition was significant, with British Land and Crown Estate among major property owners voting against the plan; the proposal narrowly failed the required 75% support in each of the 10 creditor classes during the August 1 vote but received 80% support overall, necessitating High Court approval.

River Island reported an operating loss of £65.3 million for the 52 weeks to December 28, 2024, nearly doubling year-over-year, on a 19% revenue decline from £825.8 million to £701.5 million across the 2023 comparison period. Store footfall fell 10.6% to 96 million visits while cash reserves dropped from £110.9 million to £63.1 million pre-restructuring. The brand was founded in 1948 in London by Bernard Lewis as Lewis’s, traded as Chelsea Girl through the 1970s and 1980s, and rebranded as River Island in 1988. CEO Ben Lewis (third-generation family member) has led the company through the restructuring, with 200+ redundancies in 2024 followed by 110 head office cuts in January 2025 and additional reductions through the CVA implementation.

River Island operates approximately 197 directly run stores in the UK and Ireland following the closures programme, alongside a substantial e-commerce platform, wholesale distribution through international partners, and franchise locations in selected international markets. The brand reaches consumers across women’s, men’s, and kids’ fashion with a contemporary high-street positioning competing with Next, Topshop’s relaunched ASOS-owned operation, and H&M’s premium-tier collections. For mall operators in the UK, River Island is a contracting mid-mall counterparty with active lease renegotiation rather than expansion, with leasing decisions routed through the West London headquarters under the post-CVA operational structure; tier-A locations are being retained while tier-B and below stores face closure or significant rent reduction.
