Chantry Place Shopping Centre (formerly Intu Chapelfield) opened in 2005 at Chapelfield Plain in Norwich city centre with approximately 42,000 sqm of gross leasable area as Norwich’s principal modern enclosed retail destination. Following Intu’s administration in 2020, the centre was acquired by Invesco Real Estate and rebranded as Chantry Place in 2021 to mark the transition to new ownership.
Norwich occupies a distinctive commercial position as the regional capital of East Anglia, the largest city in the UK east of Leicester and north of London outside the Greater London area, serving a catchment defined by the geographic isolation of Norfolk and north Suffolk from other major retail centres. The nearest enclosed super-regional competitors are Bluewater and Cambridge, over 100 kilometres away. Chantry Place provides Primark, H&M, Next, Marks & Spencer, and mainstream fashion and lifestyle retail in a covered environment integrated with the former Chapelfield Gardens public park. Cineworld anchors the leisure programme. The development’s 2005 opening transformed Norwich city-centre retail. The University of East Anglia, two kilometres west of the centre, adds a student catchment of approximately 17,000.
Norwich’s population of approximately 215,000 provides the immediate base. The Norfolk and north Suffolk catchment, covering approximately 600,000 within which Norwich is the only major retail centre, gives Chantry Place one of the most geographically captive regional catchments of any UK city-centre shopping mall. Norwich Railway Station connects the city to London Liverpool Street in approximately 90 minutes.
Invesco manages Chantry Place following the 2020 administration and the 2021 rebrand. The rebranding from Intu Chapelfield marked a deliberate commercial restart, distancing the property from the institutional failure of the Intu group while leveraging the physical quality of the 2005 development and the structural geographic advantage of serving East Anglia’s only major enclosed retail centre.
