JD Sports Fashion plc is the UK-headquartered global athletic-apparel and athletic-footwear retailer listed on the London Stock Exchange as a FTSE 100 constituent under JD.L. The company operates the largest portfolio of athletic-fashion retail in Europe through the namesake JD banner alongside Size?, Footpatrol, Tessuti, JD King of Trainers, and several additional banners, with a 2024 acquisition of US-based Hibbett Inc. for $1.1 billion making JD Sports one of the largest athletic-and-fashion retailers in the United States as well.

Founded in 1981 in Bury, Lancashire by John Wardle and David Makin (the J and D in JD Sports), the chain expanded through the 1990s and 2000s into the dominant UK athletic-fashion specialty retailer before acquiring Footlocker UK in 1997, Size? in 2002, and progressively building the European footprint through additional acquisitions. The Hibbett acquisition closed in July 2024, adding approximately 1,170 Hibbett and City Gear stores across the southeastern and Sun Belt United States to the existing 350-store Finish Line and JD Sports US footprint, taking JD’s US store count to over 1,500. JD Sports plc reported group revenue of approximately £10.5 billion in fiscal year 2024 (ended February 1, 2025) across all banners, with the strongest growth contribution from US operations. Strategic emphasis under CEO Régis Schultz (appointed 2022) has centered on integrating US operations, accelerating European expansion, and strengthening the digital infrastructure across the multi-banner portfolio. JD Sports remains the most strategically important Nike and Adidas wholesale partner globally outside the brands’ own direct retail.

The typical JD Sports store occupies 4,000 to 12,000 square feet across format variations, with the larger flagships extending to 25,000-plus square feet in major urban markets. For mall operators, JD Sports is a Class A specialty athletic anchor for regional and super-regional centers, typically positioned in the athletic-fashion cluster alongside Foot Locker, Champs Sports, and dedicated brand stores from Nike, Adidas, and Puma. The brand’s continued European and US expansion makes it one of the most consistent new-store-opening tenants in athletic retail.
