About this mall

Westquay opened on 28 September 2000 in Southampton city centre, developed by Chapman Taylor & Partners on the former site of the Pirelli Cable Works and the 1960s Arundel Towers office blocks, with approximately 95,600 sqm of gross leasable area across more than 125 stores. Hammerson took full ownership in November 2024, buying out joint-venture partner GIC’s 50% stake, and manages the centre as one of the operator’s flagship South Coast assets.

John Lewis and Marks & Spencer anchor the main mall at either end, with Zara, Mango, Apple, H&M, Hugo Boss, Hollister, Pandora, Skechers, Schuh, and Waterstones carrying the fashion, technology, and lifestyle inline tenant base. Westquay South, a glass-fronted extension opened in 2016-2017 on the Harbour Parade side, added a further retail and dining wing along with a Showcase Cinema de Lux. The Esplanade, Westquay’s external event space, hosts a rotating seasonal programme, a Christmas maze, a Festival of Light installation, and a seasonal ice rink, giving the centre a leisure draw distinct from a conventional retail visit.

The development integrates a surviving stretch of Southampton’s medieval city walls into its design, a physical contrast between 14th-century flint fortification and the centre’s glass-and-steel architecture that few UK shopping centres can claim. Southampton’s cruise port, handling around 2 million passengers annually, adds a seasonal visitor catchment to the centre’s core Southampton and South Hampshire consumer base; the port’s cruise terminals sit within walking distance of Westquay’s Harbour Parade entrance.

Hammerson manages Westquay as its South Coast flagship, having already run the centre as majority partner before completing full ownership in November 2024. The medieval wall integration and the cruise-passenger catchment give Westquay a commercial identity distinct from comparable regional UK shopping centres, combining a captive local Southampton customer base with a seasonal cruise-tourism layer that few other British retail destinations can draw on.
