The company has 66 retail stores around the country, including 700 college bookstores that serve over 5 million students and faculty members across the United States. The company also has its online store bn.com. The company operates through its Barnes & Noble Booksellers chain of bookstores, and its headquarters is based in Basking Ridge, NJ.

The company started as a bookstore called Arthur Hinds & Company in 1886 at the Cooper Union Building in New York City. Gilbert Clifford Noble was hired to work as a clerk at the store, and in 1894 he was made a partner and the name of the store was changed to Hinds & Noble. In 1917, Noble bought out Hinds and went into a partnership with William Barnes and the name of the store was changed to Barnes & Noble.
