IKEA operates as the world’s largest furniture retailer through a two-entity structure: Inter IKEA Group (which owns the IKEA brand, concept, and product development) controlled by the Interogo Foundation in Liechtenstein, and Ingka Group (the largest franchisee, operating most IKEA stores globally) controlled by the Stichting INGKA Foundation in the Netherlands. Founder Ingvar Kamprad established this structure deliberately to insulate IKEA from acquisition and ensure long-term mission focus, with both foundations holding non-profit charters. Inter IKEA Group reported €27 billion in retail sales for FY2024 and ranks as one of Europe’s largest private companies by revenue.

IKEA was founded in 1943 in Älmhult, Sweden by Ingvar Kamprad, with the first furniture catalog launched in 1951 and the flat-pack self-assembly model that defined the brand introduced in 1956. The vertically integrated business spans furniture and home goods design (IKEA of Sweden), manufacturing partnerships with thousands of global suppliers (Swedwood and others), distribution centers, and store-format retail including the iconic large-format blue-and-yellow destination stores typically running 25,000 to 40,000 square meters. Ingka Group additionally operates Ingka Centres, a separate shopping center business that develops and operates mixed-use retail destinations anchored by IKEA stores under the Meeting Place concept.

IKEA operates approximately 480 stores across 60+ countries through Ingka Group and other franchisees, alongside an extensive Planning Studio and Click-and-Collect network in urban centers, e-commerce in major markets, and growing investment in second-hand and circular retail formats. Ingka Group wound down its 14 Russian stores following the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, separating from its longstanding Mega shopping center business (which was sold separately to Russian parties) and discontinuing IKEA retail operations in Russia and Belarus. For mall operators, IKEA is a large-format anchor counterparty in mixed-use and power-center developments rather than enclosed mall mainline placements, with leasing decisions routed through Ingka Group’s Leiden, Netherlands headquarters and Inter IKEA’s Delft, Netherlands organization for brand and concept matters.
