Opened in 1986, Town Center at Cobb was originally anchored by Rich's, Macy's and Sears. The largest mall in the state when it opened in 1985, Town Center at Cobb added, a fourth anchor, Mervyn's, in 1986.
Conveniently located between parallel parts of I-75 and I-575, Town Center at Cobb has undergone several significant changes over the years. A new wing extending north from the east wing was added in 1993. It is home to a Parisian department store, the first in the Atlanta area. The expansion brought Town Center at Cobb up to 220 stores with a fifth anchor store.
Renovations were again completed in 1995. In 1996, J. C. Penney took over the former location of Mervyn's. Rich's and Macy's were merged into one store, closing the tri-level Macy's an original anchor. Part of the store is now a Macy's Furniture Gallery, Macy's Furniture Clearance Center. Macy's Men's Store now occupies the former Rich's location.
Most major chain specialty stores are found in the mall.
Town Center at Cobb is facing competition from all the big box stores on Barrett Parkway, two "lifestyle centers" that opened up on each end of the county and more upscale malls such as Lenox Square.
In 2008, the mall underwent another renovation project and added H&M. The project added new food court designs, family restrooms, children's play area, and comfortable seating areas.
