Bluestar Alliance has owned bebe since 2017, when the brand closed all approximately 170 US stores and transitioned to an online and licensing-only model after Bluestar acquired the operating company through a joint venture structure. The store closure was announced in March 2017 and completed by May 2017, ending more than three decades of bebe’s mall-based contemporary women’s fashion retail and marking one of the earliest large-scale physical retail wind-downs that preceded the broader retail apocalypse of 2017 to 2020. Since the transition, bebe has operated through licensee partnerships with department stores, e-commerce, and selective international franchise arrangements rather than directly operated retail.
bebe was founded in 1976 in San Francisco by Iranian-American entrepreneur Manny Mashouf, who built the brand around contemporary women’s evening wear, separates, and accessories positioned in the affordable-luxury segment. The company went public on Nasdaq in 1998 and operated independently as Bebe Stores Inc. until the 2017 wind-down. Bluestar Alliance, founded in 2006 by Joseph Gabbay and Ralph Gindi, has operated bebe alongside its portfolio of brand-management assets including Hurley, Justice, Tahari, Brookstone, Limited Too, Nanette Lepore, Catherine Malandrino, and Kensie, focusing on licensee revenue and international franchise expansion rather than directly operated retail infrastructure.
bebe today reaches consumers through e-commerce on bebe.com, wholesale placement at department stores and discount retailers, and international franchise locations across the Middle East, parts of Asia, and selected Latin American markets. For mall operators, bebe is no longer a viable standalone tenant counterparty: the brand exists exclusively through wholesale and licensee arrangements rather than directly operated retail, with engagement requiring conversation with Bluestar’s New York licensing team. International franchise market decisions route through Bluestar’s regional licensee partners with no direct bebe commercial real estate organization in operation.
