Rothy's is a sustainable fashion brand specializing in women's shoes, bags, and accessories made from recycled plastic bottles and other eco-friendly materials.
Founded in 2012 in San Francisco by Stephen Hawthornthwaite and Roth Martin, Rothy’s pioneered the use of recycled plastic bottle yarn in mainstream footwear, transforming an environmental waste-stream input into the signature 3D-knit construction that defines the brand’s product. The company was acquired by Alpargatas SA in 2021, with the Brazilian footwear group taking a controlling 49.9% stake in a transaction valued at approximately $1.0 billion, providing Rothy’s with the operational and supply-chain support of Itaúsa-controlled holdings.
Alpargatas SA, which also owns Havaianas, is headquartered in São Paulo and listed on the Brazilian B3 stock exchange, with Itaúsa Investimentos as the controlling shareholder. The Rothy’s product portfolio spans women’s flats, loafers, sneakers, and the Rothy’s bag collection introduced in 2020, all manufactured around the recycled-plastic-bottle 3D-knit construction that has redirected approximately 200 million plastic bottles from waste streams since founding. Annual revenue is estimated in the $250 to $400 million range, with the company operating as a subsidiary of Alpargatas. The product range expanded from women’s footwear into men’s footwear, kids’ footwear, and a small home-goods collection at various points across the brand’s history. The brand’s manufacturing facility in Dongguan, China handles the bulk of production, with the seamless-knit construction performed entirely in-factory to enable rapid product iteration and minimal waste.
Rothy’s operates approximately 15 standalone stores across the United States, with the format anchored in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, and other major US metros. The typical store occupies 800 to 1,400 square feet, with formats integrating the brand’s recycled-materials-storytelling, fitting-room technology, and product-discovery merchandising. Distribution combines DTC e-commerce as the dominant channel with the standalone retail network, plus selective wholesale relationships including Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. For mall operators, Rothy’s is a Class A specialty footwear tenant for lifestyle centers and premium regional malls in major US urban markets, positioned alongside Allbirds, Vionic, Naturalizer’s contemporary positioning, and other sustainable-footwear specialty brands. The dominant distribution channel remains DTC supplemented by selective owned retail.
