The world’s largest distributor of licensed sports merchandise became majority owner of Lids Holdings in 2024, completing a strategic alignment that began with a minority investment in 2019. Lids is the largest licensed sports retailer in North America, with more than 1,100 stores across the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and select international markets including the UK, Australia, France, and Germany. The portfolio operates under multiple banners: Lids, Locker Room by Lids, Fanzz, Just Sports, Buckeye Corner, and team-specific Clubhouse Shops, distributed across mall mainline, airport, street, and factory outlet formats. The Fanatics ownership reshapes the operating model. Fanatics holds direct e-commerce rights for major US sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) and operates as a vertically integrated licensed merchandise platform. Bringing Lids inside Fanatics gives the group physical retail distribution for products it already designs, manufactures, and ships. For brand and league partners, this means a single counterparty across digital and physical for licensed sports headwear and apparel. In April 2025, Lids unveiled a reinvented store concept featuring an enhanced “Custom Zone” with interactive kiosks for in-store personalization.
Lids operates across multiple mall formats with smaller average store footprints than apparel comparables, typically under 2,000 square feet. Locker Room by Lids extends into department store concessions, primarily inside Macy’s. The Clubhouse division operates team-specific stores at professional sports stadiums and university athletics venues, which sit outside conventional mall leasing. For mall operators, Lids is a high-frequency, lower-revenue tenant filling sub-2,000 sq ft footprints across mainline and outlet, with seasonal sales tied directly to local sports team performance.
