About this mall

Bentall Centre opened in 1992 at Wood Street in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, with approximately 60,400 sqm of gross leasable area spanning an interconnected series of buildings in the heart of Kingston’s retail core. The centre takes its name from the Bentalls department store, founded in Kingston in 1867; Bentalls was acquired by Fenwick in 2001 and rebranded as Fenwick in 2023, while John Lewis operates as a separate, adjacent department store in Kingston.

Kingston upon Thames occupies a distinctive commercial position as one of the most significant retail centres south of the Thames between Central London and the M25 corridor. The town serves a prosperous suburban catchment across Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden, and the affluent residential communities of southwest London and Surrey, with household incomes substantially above the national average. Fenwick anchors the centre with a full-service department store, and John Lewis anchors separately nearby, with the surrounding retail floors spanning fashion, lifestyle, food and beverage, and services across the premium and mid-market segments. Kingston’s pedestrianised town centre creates an integrated retail environment where the Bentall Centre, the nearby Ancient Market Place, and the Charter Quay leisure development collectively function as a regional shopping destination. National Rail services from Waterloo reach Kingston in approximately 30 minutes.

Kingston’s population of approximately 175,000 forms the immediate borough base. The broader commuter catchment from Esher, Leatherhead, Epsom, and the Surrey communities extending to Guildford positions Kingston as a natural retail hub for an affluent outer southwest London market.

The Bentalls name, now trading as Fenwick, together with the adjacent John Lewis and the Bentall Centre’s own retail floors, give central Kingston an institutional commercial identity that distinguishes it from generic covered malls: the site carries over 150 years of local trading history and genuine community recognition even as the department store brand itself has changed hands.
