About this mall

The Breiteneder family developed Donau Zentrum, opening it on October 23, 1975 with 22,800 sqm and around 50 shops, a novelty for Vienna’s Donaustadt district at the time. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield acquired 90 percent of the property from the family in 2003 for roughly €270 million, with Bettina Breiteneder staying on through the transition to help manage the handover.

A 2009-2010 expansion added a 28,000 sqm new-build section alongside a full remodel of the existing structure, a €150 million combined investment that included the 38-metre “Sonnenstrahl” sculpture on the building’s exterior. The center rebranded from Donau Zentrum to Westfield Donau Zentrum in September 2021, one of six European properties URW selected for the Westfield name that year.

At 133,000 sqm and roughly 260 stores, it is Vienna’s largest shopping center and one of a small number in Austria to house four Inditex brands under one roof: Zara, Bershka, Pull&Bear and Stradivarius, alongside Austria’s largest Pull&Bear store. The center marked its 50th anniversary in 2025 with roughly 19 million annual visitors and 3,600 people employed on site.

URW’s Better Places 2030 sustainability program runs a rooftop photovoltaic system generating about 2.15 million kWh annually, enough for some 600 households, alongside a plan to double EV charging capacity to 100 stations by 2030. The center also hosts a social market for the Donaustadt community, run in partnership with the Samariterbund.

Direct U1 subway access since 1982, plus tram and bus connections, anchor the center’s role as Donaustadt’s transit-linked commercial core. The Kitchen food court, expanded in the 2009-2010 project and renovated again in 2012 with IMAX-equipped cinemas, gives the complex an entertainment layer distinct from the fashion floors above.
