With the 4th of July right around the corner, thoughts often quickly turn to fun in the sun with friends and loved ones. While there’s all kinds of different ways to make that happen, there are certain destinations that spring to the top of the mind. One of those spots is the iconic Coney Island, a neighbourhood in Brooklyn that includes the famous amusement area.
That neighbourhood is on its way to becoming even more exciting. Construction is underway on Neptune/Sixth, which the project’s website touts as “It’s more than real estate development. It’s community development.”
“The comprehensive re-imagination and revitalisation of 532 Neptune Avenue and 626 Sheepshead Bay Road will create a hub of transportation, shopping, restaurants and services for the Coney Island community,” the website notes. “These exciting new destinations will feature more than 250,000 square feet of premier retail and commercial space combined, ample parking space, and outdoor landscaping and seating areas.”
Cammeby’s Development has assembled a top-notch team to make this project happen, including The Lawrence Group for the commercial leasing side, and Winnick Retail Specialists for retail inquiries. The developer has just tapped Suffolk as construction manager for a new retail, commercial and residential component of the project, which is slated to be completed in 2018.
That development will include 100,000 square feet of retail space, a 50,000-square-foot community facility, and a 42-story residential tower. To make this portion of the project come to life, Suffolk plans to use exciting new smart tools such as virtual reality, virtual design and construction, lean construction and target value design.
“The current businesses located at 532 Neptune are an important part of the plan. They are assets to the community today, just as the completed Neptune/Sixth aims to be an asset to the community tomorrow,” the project site continues. “Cammeby’s looks forward to welcoming new and existing businesses to the neighborhood destination taking shape at Neptune/Sixth.”
Retailers that have already signed on the dotted line at Neptune/Sixth include Apple Bank, Capital One, CVS Pharmacy, DII Stores, and regional boutique supermarket NetCost. Sounds like there will be plenty of visitors that come for the rides, but wind up spending the rest of the day for a little shopping. Add in the residential component, and it sounds like Coney Island will be a hot spot for these retailers.
