About this mall

Sun Hung Kai Properties began construction on what became Tai Po Mega Mall in April 1984, part of a roughly HK$1 billion commitment to the Tai Po Centre residential project and New Town masterplan. The mall opened in phases from 1985, built as the self-contained commercial core the New Town planning model called for.

The center spans five zones and roughly 598,000 sqft, anchored by YATA department store and ParknShop, a grocery-and-department-store combination built for a New Town resident base rather than regional draw. Around 180 brands fill out the fashion, electronics and dining categories across the zones.

A roughly 400-seat cinema and more than 40 dining outlets, with Zone C concentrating fast-casual and conveyor-belt formats, give the mall an entertainment layer beyond its grocery-and-department-store core. Tai Po Market MTR station sits a 15-to-20-minute walk away, close enough that SHKP runs dedicated K12 and K17 feeder buses directly from the station rather than relying on the walking route.

Adjacent sites, including the Hong Kong Railway Museum and the Tai Po Waterfront Park along Tolo Harbour, give the mall a secondary role as a stop for visitors to Tai Po’s heritage and waterfront attractions, though its core function four decades on remains what SHKP built it for: the retail center of a self-contained New Town community.
