A store in Richmond has become the first of many retail outlets of U.S. retailer Whole Foods to offer customers the option to pay for purchases with the palm of their hand.

Amazon One’s palm scanning technology will be rolled out to all Whole Foods stores. Cash registers will store customer signatures as identification, like phone fingerprint scanning.

According to Amazon, by the end of 2023, all Whole Foods stores in the U.S. will offer the ability to pay without a phone or wallet, according to Amazon. More than 500 stores will also begin offering this technology to customers. Amazon said the expansion of palm scanning technology and other similar services reflects the growth of Amazon One.

Whole Foods Market, Inc., a subsidiary of Amazon, is an American multinational supermarket chain headquartered in Austin, Texas, which sells products free from hydrogenated fats and artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Whole Foods has more than 500 stores in North America and also operates in the United Kingdom.
