Orsay closed all of its directly operated company-owned stores in June 2022 following an insolvency self-administration filing in January 2022 and the subsequent acquisition of the brand’s intellectual property, archives, and trademarks by Boston-based restructuring firm Gordon Brothers in March 2022. Approximately 1,200 employees were laid off across the original 700-store network in 34 countries; the original Willstätt-based parent company under the French Mulliez family (owners of Auchan, Decathlon, and Pimkie) had received a €33 million German government loan in June 2021 that proved insufficient against post-COVID and Russia-Ukraine war liquidity pressures.
Orsay continues to exist as an asset-light brand under Gordon Brothers ownership. Fewer than 100 employees operate the brand, focused on sourcing, design, marketing, e-commerce, and franchisee support. The brand reaches consumers through more than 190 franchisee and wholesale partner stores across Europe, the rebuilt e-commerce platform (operated through Scayle infrastructure, the B2B arm of About You), and third-party marketplaces including Zalando, About You, and others. The brand was founded in 1975 in Willstätt, Germany, named after the Quai d’Orsay in Paris, and reached pre-COVID revenue of approximately €500 million.
Orsay sells in 20+ European countries through the post-2022 model. There are no current Orsay company-owned mall stores in any market. For mall operators, Orsay is no longer a direct tenant counterparty: any new Orsay-branded store opening would route through independent franchise partners operating in their respective markets, with Gordon Brothers serving as IP licensor rather than direct commercial counterparty. The brand’s pre-2022 international franchise network in non-European markets, including Russia, was substantially wound down through 2022 to 2023.
