Alba Mall

Three local businessmen, Dorin Mateiu (who also controls meat producer Elit Cugir), Dorel Tamaș and Ioan Străjan, opened Alba Mall in November 2007 in Alba Iulia, the largest shopping center in Alba County at the time, on a roughly €15 million investment. The property expanded its leasable area twice in its first years, from an initial 13,400 sqm to 15,000 sqm and eventually to its current 19,500 sqm.

The center was deliberately designed as a “city within a city,” with interior mini-streets, promenade zones and miniature squares rather than a conventional single-corridor mall layout. More than 100 stores and 16 restaurants and cafés operate across the property, including Decathlon for sporting goods and JYSK for home goods, with Kik, Pepco and LC Waikiki anchoring value fashion.

The property includes a dedicated events venue, the Alba Mall Ballroom, used for weddings, private parties, conferences and business gatherings since opening, a revenue stream distinct from pure retail leasing that has remained part of the property’s identity throughout its history. Four parking zones provide roughly 400 spaces.

That “city within a city” design brief, delivering wedding-hall-scale event space alongside conventional retail from three local investors rather than an international developer, has kept Alba Mall positioned as a genuinely local institution in Alba Iulia even as larger, investor-backed malls like the newer Carolina Mall have since entered the same city.
