Sarasota Square Mall opened on 28 September 1977 at 8201 South Tamiami Trail as an enclosed regional mall serving south Sarasota County, anchored over its history by JCPenney, Macy’s, Sears and an AMC theatre. Westfield acquired the property in 2003 and operated it as Westfield Sarasota Square until 2019, when the centre returned to its original name. Torburn Partners acquired the site in 2021, the mall closed to trade in late 2024, and demolition of most of the enclosed structure began in February 2025. The site is being redeveloped as Sarasota Square, an open-air mixed-use district with a first phase scheduled for the first quarter of 2027; Costco continues to operate on its own parcel at the property’s edge.
