Sunway Pyramid opened in July 1997 as Malaysia’s first themed shopping and entertainment mall. The Bandar Sunway property, in Subang Jaya, was developed on a former tin-mining site as part of an integrated township that also includes Sunway Lagoon, Sunway University, and Monash University Malaysia. The Egyptian-inspired pyramid and lion sculpture at the main entrance have become recognizable Malaysian retail iconography.
Total gross leasable area exceeds 4 million square feet, equivalent to roughly 370,000 square meters, distributed across five themed precincts: Fashion Central, Oasis Boulevard, Asian Avenue, Marrakesh, and The Link. Sunway Group serves as developer and operator, with the asset held inside Sunway REIT.
The mall has expanded multiple times. The 2007 Pyramid X wing added youth-focused brands and entertainment. The 2015 SP3 phase, now branded Sunway Pyramid West, added 62,000 square feet of net lettable area. The 2024 Oasis precinct reconfiguration replaced the former AEON anchor with a 300,000 square foot district hosting 115 new tenants, including the largest MUJI department store in Malaysia and a flagship LEGO store. The 2025 Terrace expansion, near the lion statue and the New Pantai Expressway, added 30,000 square feet of additional lettable space.
The Canopy Walk pedestrian system links the mall directly to Sunway University, Monash University Malaysia, Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway Pinnacle, and the BRT stations serving each, eliminating road crossings for the largest catchment cluster.
For international retailers entering the Klang Valley, Sunway Pyramid offers high-frequency footfall from a young, multilingual, middle-income demographic. The themed architecture and integrated leisure programming continue to differentiate the property against newer Kuala Lumpur and Selangor competitors built on more conventional formats.
