About this mall

Shoppers’ World opened October 4, 1951, in Framingham, Massachusetts, with 44 stores and parking for 6,000 cars, developed under National Suburban Centers president Huston Rawls as one of the first suburban shopping centers in the entire United States. Massachusetts Governor Paul A. Dever spoke at the opening ceremony alongside Jordan Marsh president Edward R. Mitton, and the original two-tiered structure featured what was then the largest arched-beam construction in the world, a design that became a template for shopping malls built across the country afterward.

The original facility included a bank branch, an 800-seat restaurant, New England’s first self-service drugstore, a dedicated radio studio for local station WKOX, and even a uniformed Shoppers’ World police force, an unprecedented combination of amenities for a retail development of its era. A decline in attendance eventually led to the property’s closure and its 1994 demolition, with the current open-air facility, retaining the Shoppers World name, opening in its place in 1995.

At roughly 72,600 sqm, the rebuilt property’s anchors include a Macy’s Furniture Gallery, a distinct unit from the full-line Macy’s department store at the adjacent Natick Mall, alongside Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack and Best Buy. Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Golf Galaxy round out the tenant base, and Urban Edge Properties currently owns the center, which sits adjacent to the Natick Mall as a joint anchor of MetroWest’s “Golden Triangle” shopping district between Routes 9 and 30.

A.C. Moore’s November 2019 announcement that it would close all 145 of its stores, including its Shoppers World location, and John Harvard’s Brew House’s permanent 2020 closure both marked the end of two long-tenured tenants from the rebuilt center’s earlier years.

That “one of the first suburban malls in America” legacy, an unprecedented 1951 retail concept demolished and completely rebuilt in the 1990s as a conventional open-air power center under the same name, illustrates how even the most historically significant early shopping-center concepts have had to be physically replaced rather than merely renovated once their original architectural format became commercially obsolete.
