Itäkeskus is one of the largest shopping centres in Finland and historically the largest covered shopping centre in the Nordic countries by leasable area, opened in 1984 in the Itäkeskus district approximately ten kilometres east of central Helsinki and progressively expanded through three construction phases. The 99,000-sqm super-regional centre houses approximately 240 stores across two retail levels, anchoring the eastern Helsinki retail map alongside the central Helsinki pedestrian shopping axis and the larger Iso Omena super-regional in southern Espoo.
The format combines a Prisma hypermarket anchor with extensive fashion volume across the retail floors alongside the Stockmann and Anttila department store anchors and the H&M flagship that together define the principal tenant register. The original 1984 Pasaasi section opened with 41 shops as Itämarket, the 1992 Bulevardi and Pikku-Bulevardi expansion added 160 stores, and the 2001 Piazza addition completed the four-section configuration that defines the property under Citycon ownership.
The catchment combines the Itäkeskus residential population with the broader eastern Helsinki metro demographic that the Vuosaari, Mellunmäki, and Kontula communities concentrate. The Helsinki metro line connection through the Itäkeskus station provides direct rail access from across the metropolitan area, with the proximity to the Itäväylä arterial road carrying parking-led traffic from the broader eastern Helsinki and Vantaa residential catchment.
Within Citycon’s Pan-Nordic portfolio, Itäkeskus is one of the operator’s largest single assets and the principal eastern Helsinki flagship. The asset’s commercial role complements the operator’s larger Iso Omena super-regional in western Espoo by serving the dense eastern Helsinki demographic that the metro and ring road network channels into the property’s catchment.
