Ikea is running a pilot project to encourage consumers to participate in its circular economy program by organizing “car boot sale” style events. The new initiative will launch at the company’s Milton Keynes and Cardiff stores this coming weekend.
By holding free events, the Swedish furniture giant encourages residents to turn in used household items and purchase second-hand goods, thus contributing to the circular economy.
According to the retailer’s representatives, the pilot project’s successful implementation could trigger the initiative’s expansion to the parking lots of all Ikea stores nationwide as early as 2024.
The pilot project is in harmony with Ikea’s extensive initiative to create special “circular hubs” in its stores where recycled products are offered. Such measures are part of the retailer’s strategic goal of achieving climate security by 2030.
David Manser, store manager at the retailer’s Milton Keynes branch, said: “We’re excited to be hosting the first event of its kind for IKEA and are proud to be getting the local community together to sell, buy, explore and keep good things going.
“We want to make the passing on of pre-loved items as easy and enjoyable as possible, and by providing the opportunity for people to resell the items they no longer need, brings benefits to the community, the environment and wallets.”
