Alexa shopping center was planned by the architects studio Ortner & Ortner from Austria and RTKL Baltimore,USA. It was inspired by the 1920s and 1930s popular Art Deco style.
The interior is quite nice as malls go, though with its red concrete facade it is highly visible in between the other, mainly prefab panel housing estates around Alexanderplatz. By the use of red concrete, golden porches and basically no windows the architectures aim was to create an art déco building. The art déco design of the Alexa reminds of the 1920s, the glittering decade when Alexanderplatz celebrated its heyday.
Alexa, designed by American architects, is just one of a series of new projects now emerging in and around Alexanderplatz. The shopping centre itself is made up of five autonomous building elements that form a compact ensemble with their internal squares and streets.
