A wave of protests continues in the United States after the death of African American George Floyd in Minneapolis during police detention. The day before it was reported that during the protests in New York City, unknown people looted a number of shops in the Chelsea, Soho, Flatiron, and Midtown areas.
We recall that on Sunday morning (May 30) demonstrations began peacefully, but by night they had escalated into chaotic pogroms and clashes with police. Early Monday morning, the streets were swamped with garbage, shop windows were smashed and goods were scattered along the roads. While many shopkeepers provided for possible chaos in the streets and stained shop windows, the boards were ripped off by demonstrators.
According to CBS New York, Apple, Chanel, Michael Kors, Nintendo, and AT&T shops were among those affected by the riots.
Earlier curfews were imposed in New York City, but protesters were in the streets after 11 p.m., despite a ban by authorities. A number of affected stores were out of operation before opening after the crisis.
Protests began in Minneapolis early last week and gradually spread to a number of major cities in the United States, including Chicago, Denver, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Associated Press reports that over 4,000 people were detained over the weekend. In several states, protesters have robbed shops and set cars on fire. In Minneapolis itself, more than 30 shops, including grocery supermarkets, have been looted in the first days and several police stations burned.
