About Esprit

Esprit Holdings filed at least 11 insolvency proceedings across Europe, Asia, and the United States through 2024, marking the company’s second major bankruptcy cycle in four years and effectively ending its operation as a traditional vertically integrated apparel retailer. The cycle began with Belgian and Swiss subsidiaries in March and April 2024, expanded to Germany and Denmark, reached Netherlands and Hong Kong in July 2024, and concluded with Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings for the two US subsidiaries (Esprit US Distributions Limited and Esprit US Retail Inc.) on October 25, 2024, with combined liabilities of approximately $61 million.

Esprit Holdings has announced a strategic transformation into “an IP management company, focusing on maximizing the monetization of the Esprit brand through licensing arrangements,” shifting away from owning and operating physical retail. The company is Hong Kong Stock Exchange listed and headquartered with dual offices in North Point (Hong Kong) and Ratingen (Germany). It was founded in 1968 in San Francisco by Susie and Doug Tompkins, who also co-founded The North Face, and listed in Hong Kong in 1993. The brand had previously emerged from a March 2020 bankruptcy (Esprit Europe GmbH plus six German affiliates in Düsseldorf) with substantial debt forgiveness, briefly returning to profitability in 2022 before deteriorating again under inflation, energy costs, store rent pressures, and weakening consumer sentiment.

Esprit’s pre-2024 footprint included approximately 160 directly run retail stores and 400 franchise stores in Europe alongside 20 partner stores in Southeast Asia and 50 in Latin America. The post-2024 footprint is being progressively wound down across owned-and-operated geographies, with selected franchise stores continuing under independent operators and US/UK pop-ups (Greene Street SoHo, Prince Street, Los Angeles) closed. For mall operators, Esprit is no longer a viable direct tenant counterparty: the brand will exist going forward primarily through wholesale licensee partnerships and digital licensing arrangements rather than directly operated retail, with engagement requiring conversation with Esprit Holdings’ IP licensing team in Hong Kong.
