In early 2021, guests at McDonald’s in the UK will pick up drinks in dishes suitable for reuse.
McDonald’s Corporation announced a global partnership with reusable packaging manufacturer Loop (owned by TerraCycle, a recycling company). As part of the project, the companies will test a model of reusable hot drink cups in the UK.
This initiative will help McDonald’s reduce disposable packaging waste in the long term and take additional steps towards sustainable development.
The company has developed a system that allows guests to purchase a reusable cup for a small deposit. In the future, guests will be able to return this deposit by returning the meal to McDonald’s participating companies. Thanks to Loop’s cleaning system, the glasses will be cleaned according to all standards and later returned to McDonald’s for further use.
Among other things, the partnership with Loop meets all McDonald’s safety and sanitation standards. This issue became even more critical during the epidemic when the Loop methods of work and how the dishes were cleaned and treated were carefully studied.
McDonald’s is continuously looking for new ways to test and use sustainability solutions in its facilities. For example, in Germany, guests who come with their glasses get a discount.
