About this mall

IGB Berhad opened Mid Valley Megamall on November 20, 1999, as the first retail component of the roughly RM1.3 billion Mid Valley City development, a 50-acre mixed-use “city within a city” built on a site formerly occupied by an abattoir near the border of Petaling Jaya in Kuala Lumpur. The megamall was one of Malaysia’s largest shopping centers at opening, alongside earlier large-format malls like 1 Utama and Sunway Pyramid, and its opening day famously involved active construction work continuing behind the scenes as staff scrambled to make the property look finished for its first shoppers.

At roughly 1.8 million sqft of net lettable area across five main floors, the property now carries more than 430 stores, anchored at opening by Metrojaya and Jusco (now AEON), with Carrefour joining the following year and later replaced by AEON BIG. IGB REIT Management Sdn Bhd, part of IGB Berhad’s listed REIT structure, currently manages the property.

A second phase, The Gardens Mall, opened in September 2007 as a roughly RM1.5 billion luxury retail extension anchored by Isetan, positioning Mid Valley City as a genuinely two-tier retail destination spanning both mass-market and luxury shopping under one integrated precinct, with more than 11,000 parking bays serving the combined complex. The complex connects directly to Mid Valley Komuter station on the Batu Caves-Pulau Sebang rail line.

That “megamall as first phase of a much larger city” origin story, IGB deliberately building the shopping center first to anchor a subsequent multi-decade mixed-use development around it, established a model IGB has since repeated at Mid Valley Southkey in Johor Bahru, opened 2019 and explicitly modeled on the original Kuala Lumpur property.
