Maxwell Shopping Center

The Maxwell opened to its first tenants in September 2014 as a ground-level power center in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood, at 1100 S Canal Street near the intersection of Canal Street and Roosevelt Road, just east of the Chicago River, drawing from more than 15 surrounding Chicago neighborhoods. Developed by Bond Cos. in partnership with Bucksbaum Retail Properties, the roughly 230,000 sqft center was designed by Gensler. DB previously had no city or state recorded for this property at all.

Nordstrom Rack and Burlington remain the property’s core anchors; T.J. Maxx closed in early 2024 and Dick’s Sporting Goods followed on January 4, 2025, leaving Dick’s Sporting Goods’ last remaining Chicago location in Lincoln Park. Buffalo Wild Wings and Potbelly anchor the dining tier, and our own store-presence data separately confirms Ross Dress For Less at the property.

That pattern of anchor departures, T.J. Maxx and then Dick’s Sporting Goods both exiting within about a year of each other, reflects broader pressure on South Loop retail more generally: The Container Store, Show Place Icon theater and the boutique Kido Chicago have all also recently closed nearby, a cluster of departures affecting this specific downtown Chicago retail corridor rather than being unique to The Maxwell itself.
