Great World opened on 25 November 2021 at 1 Kim Seng Promenade in Singapore’s River Valley precinct with 78,000 sqm of gross leasable area, following a four-year redevelopment of the original Great World City mall that first opened in 1997. The property is managed by Great World Pte Ltd as the commercial anchor of the River Valley district, one of Singapore’s highest-income residential precincts.
The most significant element of the redevelopment is the Great World MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line, which opened in November 2022 and connects directly into the mall’s lower levels. The station opened approximately one year after the mall itself reopened in November 2021, completing the transit integration planned from the outset of the redevelopment. It connects Great World to the broader Singapore MRT network along the TEL corridor, a north-south spine linking Marina Bay in the south to the northern Singapore residential areas. This station-in-mall integration is the result of deliberate urban planning coordination between the developer and the Land Transport Authority, and it transformed what had been a car-dependent western Orchard Road mall into one of the most transit-accessible renovated malls in Singapore. Cold Storage anchors the premium grocery programming. Golden Village operates the multiplex cinema. Uniqlo, Mango, Sephora, and Charles & Keith anchor the fashion and lifestyle floors alongside approximately 70 restaurants and cafés spanning hawker food to premium dining.
River Valley is a predominantly expatriate and upper-income Singapore professional residential district, with a catchment that extends through Tiong Bahru and the Orchard fringe to draw from one of Singapore’s highest per-capita income residential corridors. The TEL station connectivity extends the effective catchment northward along the line toward Caldecott, Bright Hill, and the future northeastern extensions. Parking accommodates approximately 1,700 vehicles alongside the MRT access.
The redevelopment from Great World City to Great World represents one of the few major mall transformations completed in Singapore in the 2020s. Most Singapore mall completions in this period were new greenfield suburban developments; Great World’s urban renewal context, premium residential catchment, and TEL station integration give it a distinct commercial profile among Singapore’s regional centre malls.
