Tickets for the film averaged $16.55 in 3D and $12.62 each in 2D.
James Cameron’s highly anticipated film, “Avatar: The Way of Water”, grossed $134 million at the U.S. box office for its first weekend. Premium formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and Motion, accounted for 62% of all tickets sold. At the same time, 57% were ticketed in 3D format.
Analysts predicted that the picture would collect up to $175 million. At the same time, Disney’s expectations were more modest – from $135 to $150 million.
According to estimates by Comscore, the new film was only the fifth-highest box office gross on the first weekend of the box office in 2022. On a key metric, “Avatar: The Way of Water” equaled “Batman,” which also grossed $134 million in its first weekend.
“Although the film is opening on the low end of expectations, it’s important to emphasize the long-term outlook again,” said Shawn Robbins, chief media analyst at BoxOffice.com.
As for international box office returns, “Avatar: The Way of Water” brought in $300.5 million for its creators in its opening weekend, bringing total grosses to $435.5 million. $57.1 million came from the Chinese market. The first “Avatar” earned only $265 million in China. The market has grown significantly in recent years – from $910 million to $8 billion.
According to Robbins, the film has a good set of factors that “will ensure its long-term prospects for massive worldwide success.”
“Avatar,” which was released in theaters in 2009, grossed $77 million in its first weekend – an all-time record for that time. A few years later, it became the highest-grossing movie in cinematic history, grossing $760 million in North America and more than $2 billion worldwide.
