The company introduced the unusual Amazon One biometric device back in the fall of 2020. A feature unique to retail stores is that customers can go through the identification process by merely putting their hand’s palm into the device.
The company will install such devices in experimental Amazon Go stores. Now, Amazon has announced a further expansion of the Amazon One application. The retailer’s stores in Seattle will be equipped with this unique technology. A total of eight outlets are planned to be equipped with the new device, including Amazon Go, Amazon Go Grocery, Amazon Books, and Amazon 4-star.
Amazon One uses computer vision technology to create a unique palm print of each customer’s palm. The system links such a fingerprint to the credit card the customer provides during the initial setup, as well as to an Amazon account. When a customer enters the store, all they have to do is put their palm to the device. There’s no need to carry or take out a card, allowing for an utterly contactless interaction.
Such a move shows that Amazon has successfully tested the new option and plans to expand Amazon One’s use. It is reported that in the next few months, the device will appear in other company stores in the United States. Further plans also include the availability of the technology for purchase by other retailers.
