About this store

Operating approximately 450 stores in 45 U.S. states under the Sports Authority brand, The Sports Authority, Inc. (“Sports Authority”) was a well-known name in the sporting goods market, with headquarters located in Englewood, Colorado. Complementing its physical presence, the corporation also had a vibrant e-commerce platform under the management of GSI Commerce, Inc. Having almost a century of experience, Sports Authority became known as a leader in the sector, providing a large selection of private-label products and brand-name athletic goods with almost perfect quality.

An Innovative Legacy of Development

Established in 1987 in Lakes Mall in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, by a syndicate of venture capital firms and top executives, Sports Authority became well-known very fast. Opening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the first store helped to lay the groundwork for the brand’s explosive growth. Kmart Corporation bought the business in 1990; it had the means to expand its activities. From Kmart, Sports Authority had broken off by 1995 and became an independent company with 136 stores across 26 states.

Various Product Line

Private labels under Sports Authority included Bodyfit for fitness accessories, Aspire for women’s clothing, SA Gear for exercise equipment, and Alpine Design for outdoor products. These lines suit athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, and fitness buffs, so complement its products from premium companies.

Sports Authority’s legacy is evidence of its influence on the athletic goods retail scene, even if operations of the company stopped in 2016 because of shifting market dynamics and competitive challenges.
