About this mall

Swindon Designer Outlet opened in 1997 in the former Great Western Railway works complex in Swindon town centre, with approximately 50,000 sqm of gross leasable area and operated by McArthurGlen Group as the sole UK designer outlet occupying a Grade II listed industrial heritage building. The Victorian railway engineering halls and the iconic GWR roundhouse provide the architectural context for the outlet village within the preserved fabric of one of Britain’s most historically significant industrial sites.

The GWR Works at Swindon, opened by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1843, were at their peak the largest railway engineering complex in the world and employed over 14,000 workers at their 1930s maximum. The deindustrialisation of the 1980s led to the closure and partial demolition of the works, and the McArthurGlen outlet was one of the first significant commercial reuses of the surviving Grade II listed engineering halls. The Victorian brick construction, the original manufacturing skylights, and the preserved GWR roundhouse create a retail environment with architectural heritage depth unmatched by purpose-built outlet centres. The outlet presents Hugo Boss, Polo Ralph Lauren, Barbour, and a range of fashion and homeware brands at reduced prices within the factory spaces. The Steam: Museum of the Great Western Railway occupies the adjacent heritage complex, creating a combined heritage and shopping destination.

Swindon’s population of approximately 225,000 provides the immediate base. The Wiltshire and Thames Valley catchment from Bath, Bristol, and Reading extends the regional draw. The Great Western Main Line connects Swindon to London Paddington in approximately 55 minutes and to Bristol in approximately 35 minutes, placing the outlet at the midpoint of one of the UK’s most travelled intercity rail routes.

McArthurGlen operates Swindon Designer Outlet as the unique heritage-industrial outlet in its UK portfolio. The Victorian engineering halls are the defining differentiator: no other outlet centre can offer the combination of premium brand discounts and the experience of shopping within the original manufacturing spaces of Britain’s formative industrial railway era.
