About Sinequanone

Sinéquanone exists today as a fragmented brand whose ready-to-wear and accessories businesses operate under separate corporate owners. The French womenswear brand entered receivership at the end of 2019, and in November 2019 the SY company (which subsequently took over Naf Naf in 2020) acquired the ready-to-wear operations and store network, while the Cabrelux company took over the brand name to develop the shoes and accessories business as a separate entity. SY renamed the ready-to-wear business “Symbiose” in September 2022, but the renamed entity was placed in receivership by the Commercial Court of Paris on December 15, 2022, following a cessation of payments on November 30, 2022.

The brand was founded in 1973 by Jean-Jacques Nataf in the Sentier district of Paris with a “sine qua non” (Latin for “indispensable”) positioning around affordable feminine fashion. Sinéquanone peaked through the 2000s and 2010s as a mid-market French womenswear staple with international franchise expansion. Reported figures vary by source and reflect the corporate split: the Symbiose ready-to-wear entity reported €4.5 million in 2021 sales with 75 employees, while broader brand presence per industry data shows approximately 110 branded outlets worldwide and $23.1 million in annual revenue across the combined Sinéquanone-branded business in 2025.

Sinéquanone reaches consumers through a mixed retail and wholesale network: directly operated boutiques in France, department store concessions (Printemps in France, Inno in Belgium), corner positions in approximately 200 multi-brand stores internationally, and an e-commerce platform. The brand is not distributed through standard multi-brand fashion retail. For mall operators, Sinéquanone is a complicated counterparty: leasing for ready-to-wear store openings routes through the post-Symbiose-receivership corporate entity (operational status of which requires verification on a case-by-case basis), while accessories and shoe placement under the Sinéquanone brand requires engagement with Cabrelux as a separate licensee. The brand’s pre-2019 international franchise network, including former presence in Russia, has been substantially wound down.
