About this mall

MBK Public Company Limited opened MBK Center, also known by its Thai name Mahboonkrong, on February 7, 1985, on land leased from the adjacent Chulalongkorn University, a lease renewed in 2013. At the time, it was the largest shopping mall in Asia, a scale the developer, Sirichai Bulakul, named after his own parents, Mah and Boonkrong, whose statues still stand on the ground floor.

Eight floors and roughly 2,000 shops give MBK a fundamentally different character from its immediate neighbors: Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery and Siam Center, all connected to MBK by elevated walkways, run upmarket and mostly single-brand retail, while MBK has built its identity around bargain prices, independent vendors and negotiable pricing across categories from electronics to tailored clothing to souvenirs.

The fourth floor’s concentration of mobile-phone and electronics vendors made MBK a hub during Thailand’s early-2000s mobile-phone boom, a specialty the center has retained even as smartphone retail has consolidated elsewhere. The space once held by Tokyu, a Japanese department store, now houses Don Don Donki, a 24-hour Japanese discount megastore and Thailand’s largest branch of the chain, which has pulled in a younger, late-night crowd alongside MBK’s traditional daytime bargain-hunters. Daily visitor counts have run past 100,000, roughly half young Thai shoppers and a third foreign tourists, drawn as much by the bargaining culture as by the goods themselves.

That budget positioning is deliberate rather than accidental: MBK, Siam Piwat and the Property Management of Chulalongkorn University jointly market the wider Siam district, including MBK, Siam Paragon and Siam Center, as a single retail zone for events like the annual Songkran festival, even though MBK’s own tenant mix and price point sit at the opposite end of the market from its glossier neighbors.
