Foyleside

Foyleside Shopping Centre opened September 25, 1995, in Derry, Northern Ireland, developed by O’Connell Brothers as the centerpiece of a regeneration campaign for the city first envisioned in 1988. Built on a 6.99-acre city-centre site overlooking the River Foyle, the project reflected sustained lobbying by local politicians to attract private investment to the northwest of Northern Ireland.

At roughly 37,160 sqm (400,000 sqft) across four floors, Foyleside carries around 50-55 stores and is the second-largest shopping centre in Northern Ireland, behind Belfast’s Victoria Square. Marks & Spencer, Frasers (formerly House of Fraser) and Dunnes Stores anchor the property, with H&M, Next, Primark and JD Sports among the broader fashion tenant roster; as of April 2023, the centre was 98 percent let across 55 units.

The property provides 1,520 parking spaces and sits close to Derry~Londonderry railway station, with Ulsterbus connections. Savills currently manages the centre on behalf of owner Foyleside Acquisitions Limited.

That regeneration-driven origin, a shopping centre purpose-built to anchor a struggling post-industrial city’s economic recovery, distinguishes Foyleside from the retail-park and department-store-conversion models more common elsewhere in the UK and Ireland, and the project’s continued near-full occupancy three decades later reflects that the original 1988 regeneration bet largely paid off for Derry’s city centre.
