About this mall

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) developed BahnhofCity Wien Hauptbahnhof as the retail component of Vienna’s new central station, built on the site of the former Südbahnhof terminus; construction on the wider station complex began in 2009, with the shopping center opening October 10, 2014, ahead of the station’s full operational completion in December 2015. ECE, Europe’s largest shopping-center operator, handles leasing and day-to-day management on ÖBB’s behalf.

At roughly 20,000 sqm across two levels below the platform zone, the center carries around 90 stores, anchored by an Interspar hypermarket, with Vero Moda, New Yorker, Intimissimi and Hervis carrying fashion and sportswear, and Libro, Thalia and Press & Books rounding out books and media. Burger King, Starbucks and Subway lead a food court with a dozen or more restaurants and bakeries.

The property draws an estimated catchment of 1.86 million people and sits three subway stations from central Vienna via U1, with nine regional and local rail lines converging at the same station. A dedicated parking garage provides roughly 600-630 spaces, with the first hour free with a purchase at any center store.

That station-integrated format, retail built directly beneath active train platforms rather than as a standalone destination, gave BahnhofCity Wien Hauptbahnhof immediate, built-in foot traffic from rail commuters and travelers from day one, a fundamentally different customer-acquisition model than greenfield shopping centers reliant purely on destination shopping trips.
