Inditex closed Uterque as a standalone retail chain in Q1 2022, integrating the brand into Massimo Dutti after a single quarter wind-down process announced in September 2021. The closure ended approximately 14 years of Uterque as Inditex’s most expensive standalone banner; at peak the brand operated more than 80 stores in 16 countries with approximately 200 employees in Spain alone. The decision was the final strategic call of outgoing Inditex president Pablo Isla before the March 2022 handover to Marta Ortega (chair) and Óscar García Maceiras (CEO).
Uterque was launched by Inditex in the summer 2008, headquartered in Tordera, Barcelona, and positioned as the group’s premium-tier accessories and fashion offering, with flagship locations on Calle Serrano in Madrid and Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona. The brand reached its revenue peak of €115 million in 2019, never exceeding approximately 1% of Inditex’s total sales. The closure followed a 35% revenue decline through the pandemic and structurally lower return on capital employed than other Inditex banners, triggering the integration decision into Massimo Dutti rather than continued standalone operation.
Uterque collections continue to be sold within selected Massimo Dutti stores and on the Uterque e-commerce website, but no standalone Uterque retail stores operate in any market. For mall operators, Uterque is no longer a viable tenant counterparty: the brand has been absorbed into Massimo Dutti’s centralized commercial real estate organization within Inditex Group, and any Uterque-branded merchandise placement requires engagement through Massimo Dutti’s leasing team in Tordera rather than a dedicated Uterque commercial structure.
