About Karen Millen

Karen Millen ceased physical retail operations on September 30, 2019, when the last of its 32 UK standalone stores and 117 UK concessions closed during liquidation. Online retailer Boohoo Group acquired the Karen Millen and Coast brands and intellectual property rights from administrators Deloitte for £18.2 million in a pre-pack administration deal completed August 7, 2019, but explicitly excluded the physical store estate from the acquisition. The decision resulted in approximately 1,100 job losses across both brands.

Boohoo relaunched Karen Millen as an online-only retailer from October 1, 2019, integrating the brand into its multi-brand digital platform alongside subsequent acquisitions including Coast, Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis, Debenhams, and PrettyLittleThing. The acquisition marked Boohoo’s strategic move into premium price points: Karen Millen pricing (cropped knitted cardigans from £65, sequin lace dresses to £399) sat substantially above core Boohoo and Boohoo Premium product. Karen Millen herself, who founded the brand in 1981 with Kevin Stanford in Maidstone, England, returned to design a 30-piece collection called “The Founder” for the Boohoo-owned brand in 2023, despite having sold her stake to Icelandic consortium Mosaic Fashions in 2004.

Karen Millen has no current physical store presence in any market under Boohoo Group ownership. Pre-acquisition international franchise networks in the Middle East, Continental Europe, and parts of Asia were largely wound down through 2019 to 2021. For mall operators, Karen Millen is no longer a viable tenant counterparty: the brand is exclusively digital under Boohoo Group, which does not pursue physical retail expansion across any of its acquired premium IP portfolio.
