Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has announced the opening of its flagship store, created in line with its sustainability strategy. The supermarket will use half the energy of a similarly sized store.
The innovative supermarket, powered by 100% renewable electricity, is opening in Hook in the United Kingdom. The total retail space is 25,000 square feet.
The store is also experimental in using special doors on refrigerators, which can reduce energy consumption by 60 percent by trapping cold air. Sainsbury’s has previously stated its intention to become 100 percent water-neutral by 2024.

Sainsbury’s Director of Real Estate Patrick Dunn said: “I am immensely proud of everyone at Sainsbury’s who helped create a new store that has been groundbreaking for us, an experience that will inform future store investments. Sainsbury’s Hook is the culmination of years of innovation, hard work and progress toward a more sustainable future for our business.”
The Hook store will also actively participate in Sainsbury’s Food Donation Program through Neighbourly, which aims to reduce food waste and redistribute surplus food.
As of the second quarter of 2023, Sainsbury’s is operating on 100% renewable electricity, and by the end of 2023, the company plans to have up to 40% of its electricity coming from wind and solar panels new to the planet.
The tenth store in the new experimental concept opened in Henfield, West Sussex.
It is located in an upscale location in the Ginza neighborhood.
