Despite the trend of retailers vacating San Francisco’s city center, the beloved Banana Republic brand has launched a new flagship store at 152 Geary St., right in the heart of Union Square.

The 3,500-square-foot store is just a fraction of what was once located at the corner of Grant Avenue and Sutter Street, wh ere Gap Inc. used to occupy a whopping 30,000 square feet.

The new Banana Republic store is a two-story space showcasing the brand’s boutique collections, departing from the mass-market clothing it’s sometimes associated with. The company notes that this new space “reflects the brand’s heritage in San Francisco and is a natural next step in Banana Republic’s journey to become a premier destination for high-quality clothing, accessories, and home goods.”

Union Square has seen a degree of turbulence in recent years, with store closures including Nordstrom, Abercrombie & Fitch, Old Navy, Uniqlo, DSW, and H&M. This week, the Express store at 301 Geary St. also displayed a sign announcing its closure on October 22.
