Westfield Helensvale exists because of a planning argument it lost and won at the same time. When Westfield sought approval to build here in the early 2000s, objectors argued the site sat too close to existing centres at Southport and Runaway Bay, and that a planned Coomera centre further up the M1 should serve the catchment instead. Helensvale opened anyway in October 2005, becoming the first Westfield on the Gold Coast, with Coomera following years later rather than replacing it.
The centre carries no full-line department store, an anchor configuration built entirely around discount and grocery retail: Kmart and Target cover the discount tier, with Coles, Woolworths and Aldi anchoring three separate grocery positions across 239 stores. Woolworths was refurbished in December 2023.
The specialty register stays family-oriented and mid-market, from Lorna Jane and Jay Jays in apparel to City Beach in youth and streetwear. Hairhouse, OPSM and Just Cuts anchor health and beauty, and Flight Centre extends the services register.
Positioned beside Helensvale railway station with 2,000 free parking spaces, the centre draws directly from the northern Gold Coast corridor. Ownership is split evenly between Scentre Group and IP Generation, which bought its 50 percent stake from the Queensland Investment Corporation in 2022. For a brand assessing the Gold Coast, Helensvale’s discount-anchored format is the one a contested planning process ultimately validated.
