Opened in 1971, Sherway Gardens was 79,000 m2 and contained 127 stores. In 1975, Sherway Gardens was expanded. Further expansions occurred in 1987 and 1989 bringing Sherway to 90,352 m2 with 215 stores. Sherway Gardens is Toronto’s eighth largest mall.
Sherway Gardens mall was built in an “S” shape to accommodate community events and promotional activities in the central court with its thirty-one-foot-high skylight. Fountains, lush indoor greenery, benches and couches enhance the mall for shopping and leisure experiences.
In 1975 the “S” layout was altered to resemble a figure eight adding seventy-five no retail spaces. In 1987, Holt Renfrew, an anchor retailer, moved to the newly built wing and the fashion wing comprised of twenty additional stores filled that space.
A new south wing was added in 1989. This large ‘tent-like’ structure with its million-dollar canopy was designed by Zeidler Roberts Partnership Architects. It won the Canadian Consulting Engineering Award of Merit. Cadillac Fairview Corporation overtook ownership of Sherway Gardens in 2002.
A massive renovation and expansion to be complete by 2016 will add a second luxury department store anchor, Nordstrom, relocate and expand Holt Renfrew. Hudson’s Bay Company will build a new Saks Fifth Avenue store in the space now occupied by Sears.
The company doesn't "see a realistic path to profitability for the Canadian business."
