Mar Shopping Algarve is Ingka Centres’ flagship Portuguese asset and the largest shopping centre in southern Portugal, opened in 2017 alongside the Ikea Algarve store at Loulé in the central Algarve coast tourism belt. The 75,000-sqm super-regional centre houses approximately 130 stores anchored by the Ikea hypermarket and a Continente food retail component, with the Designer Outlet Algarve adjacent property forming a combined retail destination of more than 100,000 sqm under shared Ingka Centres operation.
The format combines the Ikea anchor format with mid-tier fashion volume across the broader retail axis and a substantial dining and entertainment cluster, including a multiplex cinema. International vertical apparel chains and Portuguese specialty retailers anchor the tenant lineup, with the design and home furnishing categories holding a higher concentration than conventional Iberian super-regionals reflect, driven by the Ikea anchor positioning and the substantial second-home Algarve demographic.
The catchment is structurally tourist-led at a higher concentration than any other Portuguese mall outside Lisbon and Porto. The Algarve tourism economy generates the principal seasonal traffic from June through September, with the Faro and Loulé municipal residential population providing the year-round baseline alongside the substantial Algarve second-home owner demographic that the British, German, and Dutch retiree communities anchor along the coast. The A22 motorway carries cross-Algarve traffic from Albufeira to the Spanish border at Vila Real de Santo António.
Within Ingka Centres’ pan-European portfolio of around 40 Ikea-anchored properties, Mar Shopping Algarve is one of the operator’s largest Iberian assets and the principal Portuguese commitment alongside the smaller Mar Shopping Matosinhos near Porto.
