Lotus Market

Local businessman Alexandru Mudura, whose family business brought Ferrero products, Kinder eggs, Tic Tac and Raffaello, to the Romanian market, opened Lotus Center in 2002 under the name Lotus Market, the first shopping mall in Oradea. A 2006 modernization and expansion program brought the property to its current scale, and Mudura’s son, Alexandru Mudura Jr., took over the family business after his father’s death.

At roughly 40,000 sqm of leasable space across a 65,000 sqm built area, Lotus Center carries more than 150 stores, anchored by Carrefour for grocery and Media Galaxy for electronics, with Zara, H&M and C&A carrying international fashion alongside Hervis for sportswear. Cinema Palace runs a multiplex fitted with Sony Digital 4K projection.

The Mudura family announced a separate, roughly €60 million shopping center project in Oradea in 2015, planned for the site of the former Înfrățirea factory in the city’s north-west, explicitly positioned as complementing rather than replacing Lotus Center in the city’s south-east. I could not confirm that this specific announced project reached completion under Mudura ownership; the family separately operates a property called Lotus Retail Park, but I don’t have confirmation that the two are the same project rather than two distinct developments, so I’m not asserting they’re connected here.

That continued local investment, whatever the precise fate of the 2015 second-site announcement, reflects how the Mudura family has stayed active in Oradea retail from the same local base that built the city’s first mall two decades earlier, alongside the unrelated Ferrero-distribution business that built the family’s original fortune.
