Lahaina Cannery Mall

Hawaii Omori Inc. developed Lahaina Cannery Mall, opening in 1987 on the site of the historic Baldwin Packers pineapple cannery in Lahaina, Maui, which had operated from 1912 until its 1962 closure. The property remains the only fully enclosed, air-conditioned shopping mall on the island of Maui.

At roughly 120,000 sqft, the mall carries more than 50 boutiques, restaurants and specialty shops, anchored by a 24-hour Safeway grocery store and a Longs Drugs location, alongside an international food court. U.S. Realty Partners currently owns the property.

The August 2023 wildfire that swept through Lahaina, the deadliest in US history in more than a century, killed more than 100 people and destroyed roughly 2,200 homes, businesses and other structures across the town. Lahaina Cannery Mall’s physical structure survived largely intact, though the property closed for seven and a half months, with Safeway and Longs Drugs reopening as early as September 13, 2023, to serve the community’s immediate needs, and the wider mall following on March 18, 2024.

That survival, in a town where the historic commercial core along Front Street remains largely in ruins even years after the fire, has made Lahaina Cannery Mall one of the relatively few functioning commercial anchors in West Maui’s ongoing recovery, a role its physical resilience during the fire itself has put it in a position to play regardless of any original retail-positioning intent.
