About this mall

Amarin Plaza opened in 1985 on Ploenchit Road at the southeast corner of Ratchaprasong Intersection, with Japan’s Sogo department store as anchor tenant, its first international branch, and Thailand’s first McDonald’s inside the building. Architect Rangsan Torsuwan designed the five-storey postmodern podium beneath a 22-storey office tower, blending Greco-Roman columns and cornices with a modernist glass curtain wall, a combination that drew heavy criticism from architects even as it proved a commercial hit with tenants.

The Erawan Group, which had operated the property since construction and in fact grew out of the original Amarin Plaza Company founded by the Srivikorn and Phansomboon families, sold the mall in 2007 to the Srivikorn family’s separate Gaysorn Group, owner of Gaysorn Plaza directly across the intersection, as part of a deliberate strategic pivot: Erawan wanted to concentrate fully on its luxury hotel business rather than continue running retail alongside it. Gaysorn incorporated Amarin Plaza into its rebranded Gaysorn Village ecosystem in 2017, connecting the properties via a 200-metre skywalk, before undertaking a full renovation from 2022 to 2024 that cost more than THB 1 billion and reopened the property under a new name entirely: Gaysorn Amarin.

Louis Vuitton anchors the relaunched property with LV The Place Bangkok, a flagship store, brand exhibition, café and a fine-dining restaurant by chef Gaggan Anand, the first concept of its kind in Southeast Asia and large enough to cover an entire building corner in the brand’s monogram pattern. A cluster of luxury watch boutiques and curated dining concepts round out the remaining floors, part of the wider Gaysorn Village luxury retail ecosystem.

That two-decade path, from a criticized-but-popular 1980s postmodern mall to a billion-baht luxury relaunch anchored by a single mega-brand’s flagship, reflects Gaysorn’s broader strategy of consolidating the Ratchaprasong district’s older properties under one ultra-premium umbrella rather than letting them compete as separate, aging assets against CentralWorld and Siam Paragon across the street.
